Environmental Policy

RoyOMartin practices environmental stewardship through forest sustainability, regulatory compliance, and waste-reduction strategies. Through forest sustainability, RoyOMartin actively replants seedlings after harvesting mature trees. RoyOMartin recognizes that healthy trees take in carbon dioxide and release oxygen, in turn lessening the greenhouse effect; thus, RoyOMartin is committed to maintaining healthy forests. From a regulatory standpoint, RoyOMartin takes a proactive approach to environmental clean-up by exceeding those regulations set forth by the Louisiana Department of Environmental Quality (LDEQ) and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). In the manufacturing process, RoyOMartin implements waste-reduction strategies to minimize the amount of solid waste disposed off-site and maximize the amount of waste product that can be reused on-site.

Waste Reduction Program

Waste disposal is a significant expense for all businesses. By putting good waste management practices into place, a company can demonstrate environmental responsibility while also reducing costs. By finding ways to recycle waste streams and thus reducing waste generated, a company can prevent pollution, conserve natural resources, avoid the potential pollution involved with managing and disposing of wastes, and reduce purchasing and disposal fees.

RoyOMartin recycles a variety of waste streams at each facility, including used oil, scrap metal, batteries, cardboard, white office paper and aluminum cans. By educating employees on the importance of waste reduction and initiating recycling programs at each facility, RoyOMartin is able to save resources and preserve the environment.

Timberlands

RoyOMartin’s timberlands have been certified by the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) since 2002, being one of the first in the South. This certification verifies that our management practices are consistent with the tenets of FSC in regard to social, environmental, ecological, and economic responsibilities. In 2009 alone, RoyOMartin foresters planted 6.3 million seedlings across 11,000 acres in Louisiana.

Wildlife

RoyOMartin is a leader in wildlife and habitat management practices. In fact, we employ a full-time wildlife biologist to oversee these activities. Our forestry personnel serve on many state, local, and national natural resource committees and boards. RoyOMartin has recently been recognized for its commitment to wildlife by the Quality Deer Management Association, the Louisiana Wildlife Federation, the Black Bear Conservation Coalition, and others.

As evidence of our commitment to the environment, RoyOMartin:
  • Exchanges rare, threatened, and endangered species data annually with the Louisiana Natural Heritage Program.
  • Has actively supported Louisiana Black Bear restoration for decades.
  • Helps fund critical Louisiana Black Bear research in Pointe Coupee Parish.
  • Owns nearly 16,000 acres in the West Bay Wildlife Management Area, used by the public free of charge.
  • Leases its land to over 1,200 hunting clubs throughout Louisiana to help manage wildlife populations.

RoyOMartin encourages and promotes environmental responsibility throughout our plants and operations. Through corporate-wide policies, our commitment to the environment stretches from our facilities to our local communities. We recognize that, as responsible corporate partners, we must maintain sound environmental practices. Furthermore, we recognize the importance of providing environmentally responsible building products to our customers, increasing efficiencies for the end user.

RoyOMartin's mills are measured on their ability to utilize all available wood residuals as part of the corporate environmental plan. Our production processes provide the capability of producing and supplying our manufacturing facilities with a substantial amount of energy, while reducing our carbon footprint. RoyOMartin sells excess wood residuals to other local firms to help them meet their renewable energy needs.

FSC Products

All of RoyOMartin's panel products are available Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) certified. This certification verifies that ROM’s timberland management practices are consistent with the tenets of FSC regarding social, environmental, ecological and economic responsibilities. RoyOMartin forests are managed in an environmentally sensitive manner. Our timberlands are living proof that our forests can be well managed and economically viable. Responsible forestry practices ensure that we will be able to provide the products needed by our communities now and into the future.

Eclipse™ Radiant Barrier Panels OSB
Energy costs are a concern to everyone. Reducing these costs starts with Eclipse™ Radiant Barrier panels from Roy O Martin. Eclipse™ produces a superior radiant barrier from the sun’s scorching radiant heat. Eclipse's specially designed foil backing reduces heat flow, which can result in energy cooling costs. Eclipse™ is available in 96" and 108" lengths (OSB only) and can be applied to plywood sheathing and OSB thicknesses from 3/8" to 23/32".

Eclipse™ Energy Guard integrates the energy efficiency of a radiant barrier and the benefits associated with diffusing vapor and air in a single house wrap product.

GreenCore Plyform™
Specifically designed to produce the smoothest finish possible, GreenCore™ is manufactured with high-quality face veneers, sanded smooth, and finished with a premium reactive release agent for a high-performing, cost-effective, concrete-forming solution, allowing for multi reuse.

Chain of Custody

As required by FSC and as a matter of responsible corporate policy, RoyOMartin has developed chain-of-custody control systems and procedures that are followed for the handling, processing, and labeling of certified forest products. Complete chain-of-custody control systems and documentation provide detailed tracking of a product from the log inputs through processing, to the final finished product shipped to the customer.
